Teaser campaign IV
Tampons, pads, cups and Environment
The discussion about the hygienic menstrual products does not stop only at the economic and health dimensions of menstruation. The impact of disposable pads and tampons on the environment represents another topic that keeps the discussion going on. People that experience menstruation on monthly basis are not to be blame for the negative impact that pads and tampons have on the environment. The responsibility is attached to those who produce pads and tampons that not only affect the environment, but also contribute to worsening the health of people that use disposable menstrual products.
According to Lunapads.com “it's estimated that approximately 20 billion pads, tampons and applicators are being sent to North American landfills annually. On an individual level, each of the approximately 73 million menstruating people in North America will throw away 125 to 150kg of disposable menstrual products (or 16,800 disposable pads or tampons) in their lifetime. These products require hundreds of years to biodegrade, particularly if wrapped in the plastic bag commonly provided for this purpose as part of their packaging. In fact, every piece of plastic ever made, still exists to this day.” You can find more at the following source: http://lunapads.com/learn/why-switch?geoip_country=CA#environment
Based on this information, we decided to create a quiz poster that aims to provide you with questions and answers related to aspects that you might not be aware of when it comes to hygienic menstrual products. Check our poster below and attend our workshop on the menstrual cup to find out more about the alternatives to disposable pads and tampons.
