About the Documentary
India: The Modi Question is a 2023 two-part documentary series aired by BBC about the Indian Priminister Narendra Modi and his relationship with the Muslim minority in the country. The first part covers Modi's early political career, including and his association with the right-wing Hindu organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and his role in the infamous communal riots that took place in the state of Gujarat in  2002 when he was the Cheif Minister of the State. The second part follows his administration after his very successful re-election to power in 2019 including the repeal of the autonomy of Jammu Kashmir and the controversial amendment to the Citizenship Act and its aftermath.

The Government of India banned the screening of the documentary and used emergency provisions under the Information Technology Rules, 2021 to issue directions for blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing the Documentary. Students' organisations and opposition parties across India have organised public screenings of the documentary in protest over the ban orders often leading to clashes between students and police. The ban is currently being contested in the Supreme Court of India.
